چکیده

This article provides experimental evidence on the pronounced three-dimensional surface effects caused by tension twinning at early stages of plasticity of a magnesium alloy. To achieve this goal, multiscale mechanical testing was combined with strain field, texture and surface morphology quantification. The current investigation correlates crystallography-driven, grain-scale surface roughening to the spatially heterogeneous microand macrostrain. It was found that tension twinning causes considerable surface extrusions and intrusions across multiple grains that are directly related to severe strain inhomogeneities. 2014 Acta Materialia Inc. Review on ultrafined/nanostructured magnesium alloys produced through severe plastic deformation: microstructures

A review on the microstructural evolution in magnesium alloys during severe plastic deformation waspresented. The challenges deserved to achieve ultrafine/ nanostructured magnesium were discussed. The characteristics of the processed materials are influenced by three main factors, including i)difficult processing at low temperatures, ii) high temperature processing and the occurrence ofdynamic r...

Strength and ductility with {101̄1} — {101̄2} double twinning in a magnesium alloy

Based on their high specific strength and stiffness, magnesium alloys are attractive for lightweight applications in aerospace and transportation, where weight saving is crucial for the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. Unfortunately, the ductility of magnesium alloys is usually limited. It is thought that one reason for the lack of ductility is that the development of - double twins (DTW)...

An efficient continuum model for the slipâ•fitwinning interaction in Magnesium

Owing to its HCP crystallography, deformation mechanisms of magnesium involve both plastic slip and deformation twinning. In order to understand and ultimately to predict the mechanical response of Mg and Mg alloys, any effective continuum model should not only describe the intricate interaction mechanisms between plastic slip and twinning, but also be able to capture the different length scale...

The nanostructured origin of deformation twinning.

We have revealed the fundamental embryonic structure of deformation twins using in situ mechanical testing of magnesium single crystals in a transmission electron microscope. This structure consists of an array of twin-related laths on the scale of several nanometers. A computational model demonstrates that this structure should be a generic feature at the incipient stage of deformation twinnin...

Microstructure characterization of ZK60 magnesium alloys using TEM and HR-EBSD.

ZK60 (Mg-Zn-Zr) alloys exhibited a variation in precipitates with aging, and their mechanical properties also changed. Microindentation tests were carried out on two types of ZK60 alloys of solid solution (T4) and peak aging (T6). Microstructure and texture evolution during indentation was investigated using electron backscatter diffraction. Twinning occurred near the indentation marks in most ...
